Postscript...
The Counting Lesson would both be an excellent celebration of Fathers' Day. The
Dutchman is an excellent celebration of writers, artists, poets, dreamers, freethinkers,
citywalkers. That means
you, right?! I thought so! Discover more below.=)

few to have this lovely
handmade edition!)
THE COUNTING LESSON, A SYNOPSIS...
It is Lawrence, Kansas, 1961, and Maarten isn't a postal clerk yet, but a newly-landed
immigrant, trying to find a way to live in this new country for his family. (Six children is a
counting lesson all its own.) In this story, which is now a central chapter in my novel,
On
Brigden Road, Maarten tries to teach his youngest daughter to count. (English is a new thing
for all of them.) But despite the pressures of their new lives there, he rediscovers the simplest,
most beautiful bottom line, the one that allows him to go on. This is a story about home...and
family.
The Dutchman: A Handmade Treasure by Bernadette Maria Joolen....
THE DUTCHMAN, A SYNOPSIS...
Meet Maarten van Meer, the highly-literate, creative, self-educated, and reluctant postal
clerk... It's four in the morning, and he has to go to work now... (This story is now the
lead chapter in my book,
The Boy from Boomstraat, available on my Published Books
Page.) This story was first published by the
Wisconsin Review in 2003, and was chosen
for publication by an editor named Martin, like the central character of my story! (That
really tickled me.) I had sent it to Wisconsin knowing there was concentration of Dutch
roots there. (I wonder if that helped at all!)
Excerpt: "He is known as the
Dutchman there. He is known
as a poet, a fool. He has been
known as some kind of
fool~~although everyone truly
likes him there. They hear
some Beatle song, Fool on the
Hill, they cannot help but
think of him..."
The Counting Lesson: A Handmade Treasure by Bernadette Joolen....
Exceprt: "He admires her
bright strawberry hair which
always seems like an omen to
him. Always seems like some
mystical magical thing. Like a
mark of favor upon a child.
Like a rainbow across a
clouded sky. Like a fourleaf
clover tucked inside a patch of
old neglected weeds..."
