De Boekenkast...
Bernadette Joolen, Accordion and Books...
Welcome to my website! This is the homemade homegrown website of one Seattle
writing girl. I am a writer of adult literary fiction with 3 books currently available,
both on this site, and on the independent publishing site, Lulu.com.  Click on the
bookcovers (right), or find out more about my beautiful books
on my Storefront
Page! I also have available some charming handcrafted literary cards and  books,
some lit journals, and some special seasonal deals on my novels. My central
storefront will offer you links for all these things! Happy shopping! Write me with
questions about anything!! ~bernadette...

These are my currently published books:
Cornelia Bloom and the Accordion Museum
On Brigden Road
The Boy from Boomstraat

These three books, although written for an adult audience, I think would also work
splendidly for intelligent YA readers, as there are themes of family, and
coming-of-age that would be of interest, as well, to that age group. There is also an
interesting, albeit fictional, exposure to themes of international language, history and
culture. The two novels, especially, offer an interesting step out of place, out of time.
It is my goal, in fact, to get these books placed in some school libraries. If you are
librarian in the schools, or have some connection to one, write me! Let me tell you
about my work!

Bio...
I am a reader, writer, walker, singer, dreamer, amateur filmmaker, accordion player.
I  was born in Amsterdam, spent my early schoolyears in Lawrence, Kansas, my
later schoolyears in LA. I currently live in the rainy Northwest with my husband
and almost-grown boy who likes to tease his mama, and plays a mean tenor
saxophone.

Publications...
My fiction has appeared in Nimrod International Journal, Wisconsin Review,
Carolina Quarterly, Crab Creek Review, and Other Voices. In 2003, I won the
Charles B. Wood Award for Distinguished Writing from the lovely people at
Carolina Quarterly for my story,
Seven Sketches for Papa. (With the prize money, I
bought my first accordion!) Here is some lovely praise for my work, from the final
judge of the Charles B. Wood Award--Jerry Leath Mills, Professor of English,
Emeritus, UNC-Chapel Hill:

See more praise for my work
in my guestbook! That story is now a central chapter in
my novel,
On Brigden Road. I remain grateful. It's the loveliest encouragement I've
ever recieved for something that is so truly important to me.
Grazie
molto.

This entry tells three stories at once--the daughter's, the father's, and the
story that they share--with both differentiation and unity, with sensitivity
and tact, and in a style that releases its narrative at once economically
and with a richness of implication.  It is a truly masterful story.
